Brian laughed it off and walked over to his wife and new baby, kissing them both on their foreheads.

“I’m gonna make that steak stir-fry for dinner. Does that sound good to you?” he asked China, gently running his hand over Amina’s head.

“Yeah, baby, that sounds good. Thank you,” she said, kissing his lips.

The sight of them made me sick. I wanted to turn my head and cry. I wanted that tenderness, needed it in my life. Why couldn’t Charles be like that with me?

Brian left then, but not before asking us if we wanted anything. I told him I was good with my wine fest, but China asked for bottled water. He promptly brought that back to her and then went to start cooking dinner for all of us.

“You’re really lucky,” I told her, fighting back more tears.

“Yeah, I am. But I’m also smart. Good men don’t necessarily fall in your lap. You have to see it in them and be smart enough to keep them. You’ll have this, too, one day. You just gotta get over this hurdle first.”

I got up from the arm chair I was sitting in and got close to my sister. She put her free arm around me and gave me a hug.

“After dinner, I’ll get that tracker out for you. We’ll catch his ass and whoever this bitch is that he’s messin’ with.”
